Jerry is a well renowned advocate of sustainable gardening in Australia. Inspired by his family of gardeners and farmers Jerry has been gardening since the age of four.

Initially trained with the Royal Horticultural Society, some years later he emerged from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, the world’s foremost botanic garden, qualified in management, curation, horticultural estate management, soft landscape design, horticultural and botanical sciences.

In 2003 Jerry moved to Bayside Brisbane to create a sustainable house and garden. His house generates solar power, recycles sewage and grey water, and harvests rainwater for house and garden use.

How much fun can be had with an empty milk carton, potting mix and some seeds??

Heaps according to the kids involved in our school holiday workshops. After learning about and tasting assorted seasonal and unusual fruit and vege, the kids really got their hands dirty while making grass heads.

The creativity and ink flowed when decorating their little friends, but the best was yet to come… Experiencing the joy of nature, watching the seeds sprout, trimming them and then eating them – YUM!!!

What a wonderful day for a wonderful cause.

With all preparations out of the way it was down to business. The volunteers were fantastic organising the sausage sizzle, cake stall and home-made relishes and jams. Let’s not forget the gorgeous range of fresh flowers and extraordinary number of raffles.

The giving nature of many made for a great day, with smiles all round and funds raised going toward necessities for people living with adolescent diabetes.

Many thanks to the McLay’s for their enormous generosity and kind-heartedness. For without their foresight and involvement there would not have been an event at all.
